12x16 kitchen layout12/12/2023 It would be good if an architect could advise you on size of windows, since roof lines and exterior symmetry play a part in size and placement of windows, however a kitchen designer's input can also be very valuable in the kitchen area. (Copy the URL and paste it in your comments and the picture will appear). A designer will be able to pick out the elements that make up that style. Post them here so others can see your style. When you find two or three that you like. Don't study them, just do a quick browse. Browse through some of the rooms here on Houzz. Arches are beautiful but I wouldn't use them with sleek, glossy, Italian cabinetry. If you want it to look very modern or a craftsmen era look, I would use a square opening. Whether you go with arches or square opening is a matter of taste but should flow with the rest of the house. Yes, light colors will brighten the kitchen. Please take advantage of the search box in the black bar at the top of the page and click 'Professionals' and also 'Products' to find ones in the Cleveland area that could help you with your project! Each picture has credits to the designer, architect, etc. Perhaps you will see something there that you like. Here is a link so you can scroll through some kitchens with white cabinets. If they only go to the cellar, could they be put in the garage and make the garage 3 1/2' larger to accommodate them? So you can visualize the WIDTH of the kitchen, I have posted the second picture. (The higher the ceiling, the more length the stairs will need to go upstairs). Do the stairs go to a cellar and upstairs? Or only a cellar? Or only an upstairs? They do seem awkward right there. What don’t you like about the master ‘suite’? Is it a suite connected to the smaller room to the east? I would recommend moving the doorway in the kitchen further east so that it isn’t opposite the bathroom door. It looks like 19x18 but it lines up with the kitchen and nook so it should either be 19x 12 or it should be drawn larger. I am not able to read the measurement on the great room. In order to be listed as a bedroom it must have a closet. It seems that the 5x9 closet should open to the smaller bedroom otherwise you will not be able to list that as a bedroom when you sell the house. If it’s too large, you could make it smaller. I feel this kitchen is an excellent choice for doing that because as different materials are introduced, the kitchen will look smaller an Closet in the Bathroom: Having a linen closet in the bathroom is a good selling feature. Backsplashes: In the photo below the backsplash is the same material as the countertop. The best way to get what you want is to go to the manufacturer and pick out the actual slab you want. Keep in mind though, that with a natural product like granite, every slab is different. If you type in granite or quartz and click on products you will be able to scroll through and see different ones. If you want lots of light and bright I would go with a very light stone, as in the photo below posted by Shiela Rich Interiors. Granite has more movement (wavy lines) in it than quartz but makers of quartz countertops are coming out with more and more natural looking stones. Some say once a year but really it depends on the granite because they have different porosities. It is more porous than quartz and requires sealing. Countertops: Granite is very popular now and probably will be for a very long time because it is a natural material. You could make this feel larger by putting a bay window with seating as in the second picture below. Shape: For a 12’ wide kitchen you should stick with an L shape with an island or U shape without an island. Perhaps a flooring specialist or architect will chime in here on that issue. Flooring: Also, because you live in a cold climate, I would definitely go with radiant heat flooring. Also, I think that 10’ would be disproportionate to the size of the rooms. The higher ceiling would be mean more heating cost. Ceiling Height: Since you live in a cold climate, I would suggest that you stick with 9’ ceilings instead of 10’.
